About This Blog
I started this blog–its oldest incarnation, that is–in 1999. Although there are consistent themes, it isn’t “about” a specific topic; it’s really about me. It’s simply an expression of my thoughts, ideas, creations, experiences and any interesting discoveries that I think are worth sharing with you.
About Jason
I was once a boy in the staunch Midwest, born not far from where the Missouri and mighty Mississippi meet, but life has taken me quite far. I have been to four continents. I have hiked through the rainforests and glaciers and deserts, dived from machines in the sky and touched the petroglyphs and altars of dead civilizations with my fingers. I rode through the Valley of the Gods and traveled across the Continental Divide on Going-to-the-Sun Road. I have lived in sight of volcanoes and watched my city consumed with wildfire, twice. I have seen the Pacific Ocean from the west and the east, and the Atlantic. I have snowboarded down giant, beautiful mountains in Colorado and California and biked through the lush green forests of the Pacific Northwest. For a time I sat with Zen students. I have known death and things worse than death, and that teaches me how to live. Sometimes I try to capture the beauty of the world in photography. I love growing things and have a green thumb.
My mother cared for the suffering and my father is a philosopher. I was raised in science and nature. My entire life I have sailed strange seas of thought–sometimes for a paycheck. I taught myself to code when I was eight, and studied Latin and Greek as a teenager. I explored fractal geometry and music. I have played many different instruments. I have said and written many things: stories, poems, articles, papers, manuscripts and a patent. I have been involved in a number of software startups. Once, not long ago, I led a team of brilliant engineers and computer scientists creating truly interesting software for the US intelligence community. I put that work aside and now hope to be a doctoral student in cognitive science at UCSD next year. I am drawn to the mind and its workings, and I want to know it so I can understand the world, other people and the strangest mystery–myself. I have much to say and to learn on this subject.
I love the fire. I have visited Black Rock City many times. There, in the ruthless, baking heat and frigid nights on a dusty playa, I have seen and made art and music and engineered visions that would light your heart on fire. I have encountered some of the most remarkable souls there. Joyful, fun, crazy, not always that stable, but utterly creative people. Knowing them, and having that world in my life, makes me glad to be alive.
My great passions in life are discovery, creation and adventure, and the celebration of life and its many wonders and pleasures with my friends and family. Most especially with my gorgeous, intelligent, truly beautiful wife. We live in San Diego, a place that sometimes seems too good to be true.
I maintain this blog to share my discoveries, creations, thoughts, ideas and experiences with the world. That is my true online anchor. Come, please dive in. I write it for you.
Oh, and be magnificent. Just my two cents, but if you ask me, it’s the only way to go.
If you want to get a hold of me, I can be contacted in a number of ways.
